Since its beginnings, the Group was already not foreign to environmental-related projects. As early between 1912 to 1939, it has been known to build the Thomson Road Waterworks in Singapore as well as the Ampang Waterworks in Selangor.
In the wake of the world’s growing concern for the natural environment and its resources, the Group expanded into the environmental industry, focusing mainly on water and medical waste.
Over the years, the Group further worked on several water-related projects, including those at Bedok Sewage Treatment Plant, Seletar Sewage Treatment Works, Changi Naval Base and the Marine Aquaculture Centre.
In the recent decade with water-shortage issues and the increasing quest for a clean-and-green environment in Singapore, the Group became more active in water-related projects by working on the landmark-sized Changi Water Reclamation Plant. The plant is said to be the world’s largest at that time with a capacity of 400,000m3/day.
In the post-SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) period, the Group saw further opportunities in Asia’s environmental industry. Leveraging on its strong engineering expertise and existing business network, the Group entered in the medical waste industry in China. It collaborated with the International Finance Corporation to provide medical waste treatment infrastructure and operating resources to various China cities. Through these Build-Operate-Transfer projects, and more in the pipeline, the Group will serve more than 100 million people in China by 2011.
